Executive Management
Hani Zeini, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, is a veteran in the aesthetics market. Mr. Zeini previously served as Executive Vice President of Inamed Aesthetics which included both the Breast Aesthetics and Facial Aesthetics businesses at Inamed Corporation. He had responsibility for North America and international markets, with a demonstrated success record of market share gains and business growth in these highly competitive markets. Mr. Zeini started his career at the Dupont Pharmaceuticals Company where he spent over 12 years and held various positions of increasing responsibility in sales, marketing and management at the company's generics and branded pharmaceuticals divisions, and culminating with Senior Vice President, Global Health Systems. Prior to joining Inamed, Mr. Zeini was the Chief Operating Officer for Acurian, Inc., a development stage venture capital backed clinical trials company. Before Acurian, he held the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Pharmasmarket.com, an Internet-based healthcare marketplace. Mr. Zeini holds a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Miami in Florida, and in 2003, completed the Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University, Graduate School of Business.
Deborah Bettencourt, Vice President, Corporate Administration, brings more than fifteen years of information technology and administration experience to Sientra. She was most recently Director of Information Technology at Inamed Corporation where she was responsible for the development and support of global IT services. Ms. Bettencourt also brings a track record of experience in global enterprise planning, manufacturing facility construction and business integration. Ms. Bettencourt holds a BA in Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Dan Carlisle, Vice President of Product Technology & Manufacturing, brings more than twenty years of innovative product design and development experience as well as technical expertise in the aesthetic/surgical market. Most recently Mr. Carlisle was Senior Director, Technical Marketing at Inamed Corporation where he was responsible for refining and improving new products for the global aesthetic market. Additionally, he served as Director of the internationally recognized Inamed Academy™, a global education and training platform for surgeons. Before Inamed, Mr. Carlisle held various management positions at Silimed and McGhan Medical. Mr. Carlisle holds a BA in Art from California State University at Northridge.
JoAnn Kuhne, Vice President, Regulatory & Clinical Affairs, has more than twenty years of global regulatory and clinical experience. She has spent more than fifteen years in management positions including Senior Director, Regulatory & Clinical Affairs at Inamed Corporation where she was instrumental in the company’s efforts to obtain PMA approval in the United States for Silicone gel breast implants. In addition, she was responsible for overseeing all product line submissions. Prior to her career at Inamed, Ms. Kuhne held senior regulatory and clinical positions with direct responsibility for regulatory approvals at Medtronic PS Medical, Smith and Nephew Orthopedics and Intermedics Orthopedics. Ms. Kuhne holds an MS degree in Critical Care Nursing and Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society and is board certified in Regulatory Affairs.
Joel Smith, Vice President of Corporate Development and General Counsel, brings to Sientra over 10 years of experience in medical device, drug discovery and other life science ventures, as well as expertise in corporate strategy and business development. Most recently, Mr. Smith was a Vice President at Tavistock Life Sciences where he had broad management responsibilities. Previously, Mr. Smith held senior business development roles at Triad Therapeutics and BioQ. He began his career practicing law as an associate at Brobeck, Pheleger and Harrison in its business and technology group. Mr. Smith holds an MBA, with highest distinction, from the University of Michigan Business School; a JD, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School; and a BS in economics and cellular & molecular biology from the University of Michigan.
